all the way from new zealand to the urban landscapes of berlin, simon beeston is a man who likes diversity. this is not just evident in his choice of residence, but also in his musical output. following an ep on highgrade digital and a track on our various artists vol. vi record, simon now presents dusty back room, his first solo 12inch release on highgrade. the ep opens with the title track dusty back room, a track of strings and stabs, and a sound not exactly typical of previous highgrade releases. but when the music comes with such compelling energy and provocative atmosphere, were prepared to make an exception. new zealand meets berlin as we cast an eye over green landscapes and ocean swells, while the bumpy groove intoxicicates us with its magic spell. that simon beeston is a man of great contrast is clearly evident on the b-side with neon cringe and cymbolic. the percussive heat of the club brings us back from the organic landscape of his homeland and into the neon lights of the night. neon cringe resonates with a healthy dose of acid pump, while cymbolic provides a bass driven journey complete with cut up vocals and blistering cymbal rolls. this is a release that richly deserves its round number: highgrade number 70. especially with the addition of the bonus digital track tough luck, another highlight all of its own.

drums have been discovered in almost every part of the world. drums first appeared, however, in excavation from the neolithic era. the oldest recorded drum is from 6000 bc. mesopotamian ruins contain small cylindrical drums that are as old as 3000 bc. egyptian tombs have yielded small drums used for ceremonies. several caves in peru contain wall markings depicting drums in various aspects of societal life. it is strongly suspected that indian drums from the middle east are as old as 5000 bc. the american indians used a series of wood and gourd drums for their celebrations and some of these drums are still used in ceremonies today. drums were not always used for music. in africa, where music is simply an interpretation of everyday life in sound, drums were used as speech. simply a pattern of beats played in a certain way could communicate vast amounts of information. jeff mills creates the drummer (pm-022). 6 track 12 vinyl ep. mills communicates through only a classic roland tr-808 drum machine, exclusively made for the purpose maker/axis. each track dedicated for the masters of the art form of drumming like: neil peart, billy cobham, buddy rich and others, mills explores how drum patterns and rhythms remain communicative on a higher level that has endured through evolution of humanity.

the particular view on a musical future might have been considerably different when olaf hilgenfeld (berlin) met iftah gabbai (jerusalem) for first sessions in 2004. the piano player hilgenfeld used the accordion that time mainly, whilst gabbai was using all instruments available, a computer was among those more by chance. only one year later the duo skinnerbox played regularly on such uplifting, innovative off-partys that came up in the new techno generation again.
that was just the beginning. skinnerbox have developed a purely electronically composed and performed music (partly featuring vocals by elle_p) – that is not based on loops but improvised techno inspired house and minimal house. the roles in the duo are clearly settled: olaf hilgenfeld – moog synthesizer, iftah gabbai – hardware drum machines, max/msp und ableton live.
all these distinct impacts and effects can be heard on their various releases from the last two years, but far better in their live sets. skinnerbox are an experience, taking you on expedition with paralyzing minimal, breaking house, hard-edged techno-jazz, and ambient electronica futurism.
it was a desire to eternalize this play- & colorful diversity, often just caused by the moment, as entire homogeneity. thus, they needed to leave temporarily their environmental techno and minimal house scapes. >king of spades and marmalades< – the result – is a jazz opus wrapped into a disco suitcase. it is a reminiscence as well as going far ahead of daily musical habits, shown not at least by the order of tracks, do not starting with a stunning hit of the album, but with 20 minutes of challenge.

the genesis came late last year when oliver ton invited various musicians for a jamming session. in the spirit of some masterful moments in music oliver ton and production partner ronald christoph captured something unique sounding with a dance record built largely around a vocal, guitar and piano performance. it was immediately signed to berlin based white records and assigned the fitting cat. no. of white999!!!

summer may be coming to an end, but south of the equator spring is springing with the fresh new sounds of emerson todd. making his get physical debut, this rising talent caps off a stellar 12 months with 3 tracks of funkladen and infectious house. a new talent on the international scene, emerson todd has been making a name for himself for over 10 years in the southern hemisphere. starting out in nz as one half of house of downtown – who produced 2 full length albums and a film score – todd relocated to australia in 2003 and shifted his focus towards audio engineering, spending years afterwards travelling back and forth between the 2 countries for his various dj residencies and studio commitments.

jesper dahlback is one of swedens leading djs/ producers with a lengthy back catalogue to his name, including co-production on two tiga albums, the hugg and pepp project with cousin john dahlback, and remixes for the likes of rex the dog, zoo brazil, arnaud rebotini of black strobe, thomas p heckman, robyn, the knife, and depeche mode. jesper has music in his genes, but it was the musical movements in detroit, berlin and london that inspired him to start producing techno, back in 1991 in his bedroom studio. completely hooked, by 1993 he d formed the stockholm-based globe studios together with peter benisch and adam beyer (following a chance meeting on the train to love parade?) and has worked there ever since. in 1996 jesper started the imprint, blank, mainly for his own material, and simultaneously launched joint venture dk with thomas krome - one of the first labels in sweden with a techno house crossover approach! in addition to making music for various techno labels around the world and working with planet rhythm, jesper met up with swiss-born stephan grieder who had just started the svek label. the duo started to experiment with different sounds, drawing on house musics roots, utilising vocals and acoustic instruments. jesper now describes his sound as >ranging between the analogue sounds of the roland sh101 and the precision mathematics of my computer. i m a researcher and developer of unheard sounds! since the founding of globe studios, i have always been looking for new ways to bend the rules and test the unknown. when i dj, i just play my own productions blending old classics with new unreleased demos.< a producer first and foremost, jespers dj dates find him weaving a soundscape of his productions, remixes and collaborations with new material at every gig, as well as musical elements and sounds worked through the set. one of his favourite current ventures is his part in jori hulkkonens acid symphony orchestra.

lifeworld presents the intergalactic techfunk from the minds of glasgows solab. known for their killer releases on 7th sign and various other labels, you know you re in for something good! distant galaxy is a deep and mesmerizing track. killer beats accompanied by a great grooving bassline provide for a tight back bone. topped by erie synth strings and spaced out effects, this track is a real burner. on the flip we have the killer track new life. this track is simply gorgeous. just check the exquisite multi layered sounds and killer percussion. sleazy and slow paced grooves. this is sssoooo good! last but not least solab take things into much housier territory. wide awake is a static paced dancefloor nugget with a deep bassline and atmospheric soundscapes. the filtered synth sound running through out the whole track gives this track a true house feeling. this just cant go wrong!

itÆs been a couple of years since victim last released a full 12, but just like the buses you wait that long and then two come along at once. for victim, the >off piste< 12 follows hot on the heels of their split 12 with jerome hill & dont recordings. in the case of ben pest, they are coming thick and fast at the moment, with a recent release on lukes angers bonus round label, and an upcoming 12 on the seriously deranged panic bridge label. so, all in all a busy few months. as for the tracks, they all share in common a seriously weighty bottom end, and a tendency for crunchy acidic midsàbut that is kinda where the similarities end, as ben takes the opportunity to explore various avenues off the main street of techno. from the stomping acid workout of >zeedonk< to the more electro-influenced beats of >pain n gain< this is a record that covers a fair few bases (basses?), although all with the aim of thrilling a crowd that enjoys their techno on the gnarly side.

first single from the forthcoming izmo album æearly night. izmo is a young frenchman born in 1984 in paris. he was discovered by harley&muscle a few years back when he tried to get in touch with them.. he started making music at the age of 15 years old , strongly influenced by the ambient and electronica music coming from uk and germany. as years passed by, his frequent holidays in englands midlands led him to discover various club scenes with the 4 to the floor spirit.. from hard stuff to funky and mellow music , izmo was soon found searching for a sound that was calling him... years passed by and izmo is now deep into house music where he finally found his roots in the 90s house music vibe from new jersey , chicago , detroit , england and france. may it be true garage or deep house, the groove, spirit and energy of this period has touched him deep inside and he is now a fierce defender of what he calls true school house music as opposed to old school or new school: i hate when people say that this sounds old school and that style sounds old or whatever...for me, a vibe is timeless ... izmo is also a deep techno head and all sorts of raw dance music.. watch out for his deep jacker and brawther aliases in the future... in summer 2007, izmo releases his first e.p. as a 12 inch on french label 9ts records, and gets a very good response, support and plays by legendary tony humphries... disguised as a tribute to smack productions , his where is eddie e.p. touched people from all different scenes, from deep house to uk garageà in 2008 , he will release his first full length album on little angel records, 14 tracks of strictly deep house music of different moods and atmospheres. izmo is thirsty and he will keep on trying to better his music for the pleasure of the real house heads. keep it underground ! support from laurent garnier, gorge, scope, osunlade, rocco, jay tripwire, dj rork, marlon d, dj dealer & more
